March Town manager Ashley Taylor looks forward to his side's trip to Gorleston after beating Brantham Athletic

March Town’s newly-found defensive form will be put to the test this weekend when they visit high-flying Gorleston.

Goals from Lewis Hilliard – who has signed on dual registration with Peterborough Sports –and captain Danny Emmington handed The Hares a 2-0 win over Brantham Athletic last Saturday, meaning they have conceded just once in their last three games after shipping 19 in the previous five.

Their credentials are now set to be put to the test by league leaders Gorleston, who have lost just one of their 16 Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division fixtures so far this season, and March boss Ashley Taylor isn’t underestimating the task.

“We know it’s going to be tough. We know it’s going to be a challenge,” he told The Citizen.

“They are flying, so I think they’re probably nailed-on favourites for the league. But these are the types of games you’ve got to enjoy.

“You’ve got to go there believing you can get something out the game. There’s no point going there thinking the game’s a write-off, that can’t be the mentality.

“We have to go there with belief, we have to have a clear idea and game-plan for what we want to do. Then hopefully we can get something from the game.”

For Taylor, the most important thing for this game and those that follow it is to make sure they stay tight at the back. “To have that stability there, that platform to build on in games, is really important,” he said.

“I’m really really pleased with how the whole team’s been defending, especially in the last three. We got a clean sheet at Thetford who were on a good run, conceded one to Newmarket who are a really good attacking side and got a clean sheet on Saturday.

“The signing of (keeper) Charlie Congreve has been important to that. He’s been fantastic since he came in.”

The Hares manager was delighted with his side’s performance in that win over Brantham, which consolidated their mid-table position.

“They’re a team in a similar position to us, so it was a big game and we managed to get a good 2-0 win. It was a tough game. Defensively they sat in and defended their box well and tried to hit us on the counter, but I always felt there was going to be a moment where we’d score.

“The good thing about our performance was even though they frustrated us a bit, we stayed patient and kept trying to carve open opportunities.”

Long-serving defender Max Mattless confirmed this week that he is leavin the club.
