A talented rugby player at Wisbech Grammar School has taken a hat-trick in his first appearance for the Bedford Blues Academy.

Ryan Hutler (17), from Friday Bridge, has been in training with the under 19 Bedford side since selection in the summer, and he made his first appearance for the team in an away match against Ealing Trailfinder Academy on Saturday.

Coming on from the bench in the 30th minute he found the team losing by 17 points to 22 at the end of the first half, but his hat-trick after the interval helped spur the side to a famous 48-22 victory – and his pivotal contribution was branded a ‘dream debut’ on the academy’s website.

A member of the Leicester Tigers’ elite player development group for the last four years, Ryan plays for the school’s 1st XV. He has represented Norfolk county and eastern counties at U14 and U16 level and he is currently in trials for the eastern counties U17 squad.

At the Bedford Blues Academy he is following in the footsteps of past pupil Alistair Price, who was the winning captain of the Bedford Blues Academy U18 side in the East Midlands Rugby Union National Colts Competition final in May 2011, playing at number nine scrum half.

He then signed and played for the full Bedford Blues team from for a two-year spell in the Championship Division before representing Scotland in the under-20 Six Nations Tournament, playing against England, Wales, Ireland, Italy and France and going on to compete in the under-20 Junior Rugby World Cup in Nantes.

Ryan said: “My team mates were proud of me and really pleased because it was my debut. I thought it was a great experience and to get three tries made it even better.”

Wisbech Grammar School’s head of rugby, Mr Alex Laybourne, said: “We are proud of Ryan’s achievements. He has developed well this season and it is good to see him perform on a bigger stage.”

Meanwhile, Alistair Price, who signed with Glasgow Warriors in 2013, had nine months out of action because of injury and is now occasionally being subbed to play for Stirling County on a regular basis to give him game time.
