Parson Drove boss sets his improving side a points target in the Thurlow Nunn First Division North

Parson Drove boss Arran Duke wants his side to break the 50-point barrier going into the season's final five games.

That target remains well within Drove's reach despite a 3-1 home defeat to Holland at the weekend.

Drove already have 47 points - a record points haul for the level - heading into Saturday's home clash against joint leaders Great Yarmouth Town.

Duke said: "We're not playing anyone who is done and dusted with nothing to play for, so we have to make sure that we still are playing for something.

"We set ourselves a target last week and we want to beat the 50-point target and we're three away from that.

"From a personal perspective, my top points-scoring season in the Thurlow Nunn is 52 and that was the COVID season at March,

"We've got 15 points to pay for. So there's an opportunity to do that."

Duke added: "It's a positive place considering we've had a difficult run in terms of playing teams in the play-offs and challenging for the title, we've competed and we haven't been a million miles away in any of those games.

"It's a very positive place and long-term it's only going to get better."

Alex Vincent registered his 11th campaign goal while Matteo Perkins struck the post and Byron Adiado went close to netting for a second successive game against Holland.

"It was fine margins that one as we had opportunities, plenty of them," said Duke.

"We're so much more competitive this season and we've just played against another team in the play-offs that has been there all season and we don't look a million miles away from that.

"Long-term it is a positive thing for the club but short-term we're disappointed not to take anything today.

"If we'd have gone in 1-1 at half-time it would have been nice but we reacted in the second half.

"We came out and they were sort of sitting back. We had time to play out with direct, which was not pretty, but again it was effective.

"We had a chance at 2-1, hit the post and they've gone straight up the other end and scored a third.

"That's how fine a margin it is but it is pleasing for me as a manager to see how. How much we've improved as a group.

"That's the difference, we're not switched on enough for 90 minutes. We have these little lapses of concentration which cost us and that is something we need to look at going forward.

"But we've improved so much as a group and it's just those little pieces to put together to get us where Holland are now next season, so.

"We need to be a bit more streetwise, no doubt about it. We've got a young group. There's a couple of older heads, but again they have to be on the pitch to be able to tell them and talk.

"They weren't on the pitch all the time and we just switch off a little bit and have lapses in concentration at times.

"Again that's inexperience but after a year at this level, a lot of them are going to learn and hopefully that'll be another positive next season."

Duke felt the Matteo Perkins shot that came back off the post was the game's turning point.

"You'd back him all day and it has clipped the inside of the post and come back out, it's one of those.

"He's scored 18 goals this season and will probably score another five before the end.

"Byron had a chance and he's been scoring goals recently but it just bobbled up and he missed it.

"To be in those positions and to keep creating chances is something that we couldn't do last season."

Although Duke is open to rotating his squad, he admitted he was loathe to make sweeping changes to his starting line-up on the back of the club's 6-3 win at Wivenhoe Town the previous weekend.

"The performance last week justified that we didn't make too many changes to our starting 11 today," he said.

"After a 6-3 victory away from home it would have been wrong to make lots of changes, but everyone's still got plenty of minutes.

"Players coming back from injury are getting minutes and regardless of the results it certainly feels a good place to be at the minute in terms of the group owning it together."
