Future's bright for March Town as well as present, with kids called up
March Town entertain Leiston Reserves on Saturday looking to continue their 100 per cent start to the season.
The Hares followed up an opening day 2-1 defeat of Great Yarmouth Town at the GER with a thumping 4-0 win at Framlingham on Saturday.
Jack Friend now has four goals from two games after netting another brace, and there were also goals for strike partner Craig Gillies and substitute Toby Allen.
And, after impressing when coming off the bench against Yarmouth, Lewis Gibson, Jack Rawson and Brody Warren were handed starts.
Striker Warren (17) impressed again in the week that manager Arran Duke brought another 17-year-old to the club in midfielder Efraim Romanos, while Scott Callaghan has left to join Lakenheath
Duke said: “Scott has left on good terms but he did not think he was going to get a lot of game time this season, and to be fair that would probably have been the case.
“We’ve now brought Efraim in and, like Brady Warren, he is a young player with massive potential. He was in our U18 team last year and he is a very exciting talent. It’s great to see young players coming through and they are good enough to be in the first team squad.”
On Saturday’s victory, he said: “It was a great performance, a good result and a clean sheet .
“We controlled large parts of the game and that is something we have been working on a lot so that was really pleasing. We have a big squad so it was encouraging to see the subs that played well in the first game start and play well again. And once again, those who came off the bench against Framlingham made an impact, with Jack Frohawk setting up Toby Allen for his goal.
“I look at the bench we have and I feel it gives everyone a lift to see what a strong squad we have.”
Saturday’s opponents Leiston have made a decent start to the season, with two wins from three games, but Duke is more concerned about his own side than Saturday’s opponents.
“They’ve started well but it’s hard to know what you are going to get when you play a reserve team. They may include players on the fringes of the first team. But we are setting our standards high and we are going out there looking for a result, whoever we play.”
March team at Framlingham: Congreve, McLeish, Emmington, Short, Burrows, Gibson (Frohawk), Rawson (Allen), McQuaid, Warren, Gillies, Friend (Romanos). Sub (not used): Cooke.
• March’s game at King’s Lynn Reserves tonight was called off because of a case of coronavirus in the Linnets camp.
