League leaders Wisbech romp to victory

Wisbech Town’s Rutland League leaders stormed to a swift 10-wicket triumph over Burghley Park on Sunday.

Brodie Ellis sliced through the tail to record the stunning figures of 6.1-2-7-5 as Burghley collapsed from 56-4 to 68 all out in 23.1 overs.

He was supported by Kieran Haynes 1-22, George Gowler 2-21 and Gary Freear 1-13.

Thomas Hoyle smashed 26 not out from 17 balls and Jonny Garner an unbeaten 43 runs from 22 meaning Wisbech galloped to 70-0 in the seventh over. It gives Wisbech a 53-point Division 1 lead over rivals Peterborough Town. ​

March 1st XI returned to winning ways with a four wicket last ball victory against top of the table Eaton Socon on Saturday.

Eaton Socon batted first and were restricted to 174-9 off 50 overs.

A good all round bowling performance with captain Andrew Wright leading the way, taking 4-40 and on his debut, Connor Porter taking 2-38.

Due to the weather conditions, March needed to score 145 off 38 overs which they did, running a leg bye off the last ball of the match.

The victory was set up by a third wicket stand of 111 between Udana Ranathunga (48) and Brandon Phillips (52) who both hit six fours.

March 2nd XI continued their winning ways with a seven wicket victory away at Royston to go into third place in the Senior League Division 1.

Royston were bowled out for 94 off 28.3 overs. The wickets were shared out with Tyler Phillips taking 2-22, Tommy Howgego 2-13, Shae Pooley 3-11 and Matt Vail 2-20.

March reached 95-3 with Lewis Welcher scoring 39 (five fours) and Tommy Howgego 30 not out (six fours) from 17 balls.

March’s Sunday Rutland League Division 1 game with Market Deeping was abandoned.

In the Fenland Trophy Ernie Wool Cup, March 2nds triumphed at Ramsey by six wickets. Ramsey made 138-9 in 35 overs and March sped to 139-4 in just 25.2 overs. No details were available.

Both Wisbech Town 1st and 2nd XIs lost to opponents chasing revised targets on Saturday as wet weekend conditions continued.

The first team lost to Histon by four wickets in the Cambs League Premier.

Openers Gary Freear and Danny Haynes went for ‘ducks’, then Josh Bowers scored 25, Sam Albutt 18, skipper James Williams lbw for 49 and Chris Clark 29. Wisbech recovered from 78-6 to reach 153 all out from 46.4 overs.

Histon, going after a revised target of 121 from 35 overs, made 122-6 with 17 balls to spare.

George Gowler took 2-14, Freear 1-24 and Anthony Palmer - who added a run-out - 2-21. This leaves Wisbech in fourth spot in Whitings Division 1.

Orton Park condemned the 2nds to a seven-wicket defeat. Wisbech posted 180 all out in 37.3 overs while Orton, needing 157 from 45 overs, replied with 159-3 in 30. No other details were available.

Wisbech 3rds crashed to visitors Sutton by seven wickets.

Wisbech were shot out for 101 in 36 overs. Opener Nick Osbourne struck 20, Jack Woollard 12 and Joshua Osbourne 19 not out. Extras was top scorer with 27.

Sutton cruised to 102-3 from 23 overs. Jack Woollard and Mark Buttriss both bagged 1-19, while Matt Duff took 1-14.

CCA Senior League Division 1 basement side Chatteris lost at Needingworth by three wickets but gave a good account of themselves.

Chatteris posted 159-6 as their 45 overs closed. Skipper Max Kelly compiled 14, Stuart Porter 30, Peter Munns 43, Anthony Bamford 19, keeper Archie Palmer 18 and Liam Boxall not out 11.

Needingworth were made to work for their 162-7 from 44.1 overs. Anton Kaval grabbed 1-27, Andrew Wool 3-26 and Bamford 3-20.

Chatteris 2nds were in a promising position at 38-0 in the ninth over when Saturday’s game at home to their Bluntisham counterparts was abandoned.

Bluntisham 2nds had made 214-6 in 40 overs. No other details were available.
