Whaley backs former club Wisbech to beat the drop

Brett Whaley is backing Wisbech Town to beat the drop.

The Fenmen remain in the bottom three of the Northern Premier League Midlands Division table and seven points adrift from safety following Tuesday night's 2-0 derby defeat at Spalding United.

But Whaley believes the club he left for pastures new at Spalding last December has more than enough to get themselves out of trouble between now and the end of the campaign.

Whaley said: "I know they've got to resolve the management issues but they have got good players.

"They were unlucky not to get a result against Stamford who are up there on Saturday and they were unlucky not to get a result against us on Tuesday.

"If they can continue to put in a shift like that against other sides, they'll be all right. They have got players who can score goals and they are also very difficult to break down."

Whaley felt his former club were good value for a point at the Sir Halley Street ground despite late goals in either half from Jordan Mcleod and Nathan Stainfield.

"I can't say we deserved to win the game, but you have to give Wisbech credit for that," admitted Whaley.

"It wasn't an attractive game of football and when Wisbech did get the opportunities wither our goalkeeper or Stain (Nathan Stainfield) at the back put in a block or made a save.

"I've got a lot of respect for Wisbech as a club and the players and I don't want to see them struggling towards the bottom of the table.

"They've put in a real shift and have caused us as many problems as we had at Halesowen on Saturday.

"It was a difficult decision to leave them as a football club because you're close to everyone there.

"But this opportunity came along with a club who want to be pushing towards the top and you have to look after yourselves."
