Jon Fairweather is excited to kick off his second spell at Wisbech Town FC

Returning star Jon Fairweather is excited to get his second stint at Wisbech Town FC under way.

The 30-year-old confirmed he would be returning to the Fenland Stadium last week after talks with manager Brett Whaley.

And the central defender says those discussions played a huge part in his decision.

“I’ve played for Brett before and I’ve got all the time in the world for him, he’s a really nice guy,” Fairweather said.

“In terms of knowing the manager, it’s a massive pulling point when you’re thinking of joining a team.

“Getting back to where I’ve come from was a big part of the attraction. Obviously with the little one having arrived and being a bit older now, things have settled down a bit. So I’m really excited to be back.

“I’m actually looking forward to getting back to football, which if you’d asked me six months ago that wouldn’t have been the case.”

Fairweather says that the decision to re-sign for the Fenmen has resulted in a quick turnaround of his daily routine.

“It’s a weird one because it’s been a complete mentality change almost overnight.

“For the last however many months all I’ve been saying to everyone is that I can’t see myself getting back into football. I was more than happy to spend time with the kids and the Mrs.

“I’ve started running again, I’ve started going to the gym. It’s a complete change, so I suppose subconsciously I am really excited and really buzzing to get started again.

“Whether I’ll be any good is a different question. I haven’t kicked a ball in eighteen months so I might be a pile of rubbish with everyone slating me in a couple of months time, but hopefully not!”

Ahead of joining up with the Wisbech Town squad for pre-season, Fairweather has his sights set on a strong 2021/22 campaign.

“It’s always nice to win something. If we get a couple of good cup wins and earn some money for the club, that would be nice.

“We’ll just try and push for mid-table and build on where the club has been at, because they’ve been down in the lower regions of the league.

“I can hopefully get back to the level I’ve been at before, and I’m looking forward to giving this league another crack.”

Fairweather is the biggest signing so far in what have been a busy few weeks in the Fenmen’s recruitment process.

Four former March Town players have committed to Wisbech, with goalkeeper Charlie Congreve, left-back Tom Mcleish, midfielder Eoin McQuaid and forward Toby Allen signing terms.

Defenders Aaron Hart, Ben Richards and Kyle Davison Gordon have also penned extended deals after originally signing for the club mid-2020.
