Wisbech triumph in FA Cup but March bow out at first hurdle

There were contrasting fortunes for Fenland teams in the Extra Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup this afternoon.

In two United Counties Premier v Eastern Counties League Premier clashes, Wisbech Town beat Ely City 5-1, but March Town lost 2-1 at home to Sheringham.

Striker Kyle Onyon gave the Fenmen a 13th minute lead against the Robins, and the same player made it 2-0 in the 47th minute. Six minutes later, midfielder Mo Janneh made it 3-0, only for Ely to pull a goal back on 74 minutes through Jordan Foster.

However, any thoughts of a comeback were short lived, with Kieran Hamilton making it 4-1 in the 83rd minute and Janneh getting his second in the 90th.

Step 5 Wisbech will play away at Step 4 side Kempston Rovers, who play in the Southern League Division One Central, on August 20 in the Preliminary Round, after the Bedfordshire side won 2-0 at home against Long Melford this afternoon.

March saw captain Danny Emmington stretchered off with a knee injury as they were beaten for the first time this season against their ECL visitors (see report here).

Right back Sam Garner gave the Hares a half-time lead against the run of play with a cracking drive deep into added time.

However, Jamie Nelson was the Norfolk hero after 46 minutes when he equalised for The Shannocks, and George Diggens gave the visitors a deserved victory in the 60th minute.
