Fenland driver makes his presence felt at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix
George Russell secured a commendable third-place finish at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix at the weekend.
The driver, who hails from Tydd St Giles, claimed his fourth podium of the season and Mercedes’ first top-three result at this venue.
Starting from fifth on the grid after what he described as his “worst qualifying” of the season, Russell opted for a bold strategy by beginning the race on hard tyres.
This choice paid dividends when a timely Virtual Safety Car (VSC) allowed him to make a pit stop with minimal time loss, propelling him ahead of key rivals.
Following the race, Red Bull protested, alleging that Russell failed to adequately slow down under yellow flags during the VSC period. However, stewards reviewed telemetry and onboard footage, concluding that Russell had sufficiently reduced speed.
This led to the dismissal of the protest and affirmation of his podium finish.
Reflecting on his performance, Russell expressed his satisfaction, saying: “Really happy to come away with P3 because I’ve been struggling this weekend.
"But ultimately, when it mattered, got a really good result today.”
This result places Fenland-based Russell third in the Drivers’ Championship standings, trailing only the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
His consistent performances have been pivotal for Mercedes in a season where McLaren has demonstrated dominant form.
