Fenland drivers battle it out in front of record King’s Lynn crowd
The promise of the biggest turnout of cars yet for the two-litre banger World Final at Lynn on Saturday led to a record crowd.
Before the main race, Fenland drivers Kieran Gray, Jack Maryon and Aston Gibbons tried to qualify through the last-chance races. Maryon was unlucky not to grab a pass into the race through an entertainer award with a good performance but with many good contenders following a great race he just missed out.
Gray will also be disappointed when he was in the top three throughout the last half of his last chance race and also led for a while only to find himself being spun out of contention coming out of the final bend.
Full credit goes to James Licquorice who played a big part in the pre-race build-up by taking time out for a social media session which no doubt helped to swell the crowd.
Licquorice qualified for the race after winning the two-litre banger World Qualifying entertainer points and found himself out of luck in the early stages of the big race though.
Suffering disappointment early on were Brad Bartram and Max Stott.
Bartram’s race ended with mechanical problems around seven laps into the main race.
It was always going to be a tough order for Stott who was only in the race as defending champion having failed to qualify through the normal points.
This meant he had to start at the back of the 50-car field.
Stott raced a stunning-looking all-gold car as defending champ and was making good progress in the early stages of the race when he got caught up in the heavy traffic.
Kieran Bowman, of the Predators, won the World Final.
Licquorice showed his speed in the rest of the night when he picked up a second and a fourth-place finish in the All Comers races.
Sam Parrin had a great result in the two-litre stock cars with a third-place finish in his first race.
Tommy Parrin picked up a sixth-place finish in the same place before going on to get a solid eighth-place finish in the Steve Newman Memorial which was won by Diggy Smith.
Unfortunately, he was then involved in a heavy crash which aggravated a previous shoulder injury.
Racing returns to Lynn on Saturday (5pm) when we are transported back in time with the annual Pre-80 meeting.
Booked for action in the bangers are James Ellis, Dan Clarke, Joe Geeves and James Licquorice whilst the 1300 stock cars will include Tom Alsop, Lee Green, Sonny Wright and John Klyn.
