Wisbech land top striker as more of last season's squad sign up again
Wisbech Town boss Brett Whaley has made his first big summer signing and snapped up prolific striker Avelino Vieira.
The 32-year-old Portuguese forward announced he was leaving Peterborough Sports this week, after netting 140 goals in 230 games for the Southern League Central Premier Division side, in Steps 6 to 3.
Fenmen boss Brett Whaley said: "This is a massive signing for us. He's had success at this level and higher and always scores goals. He's got so much to offer our squad and will be a big influence both on and off the pitch. I'm delighted to have him on board."
Sports manager Jimmy Dean said on Twitter: "He was my first signing and has given us five brilliant years. It’s Ave’s decision to leave and after what he’s given me I can only give him my full support. Thanks for everything mate."
This evening it has been confirmed that defender Liam Marshall, and midfielders Layton Maddison, Sam Murphy and Jay Whyatt have also signed on again, with another midfielder Danny Setchell rejoining from Holbeach United.
Right back Aaron Hart and striker Tiago Nassunculo have decided to seek pastures new. Hart said on Twitter: "Huge thank you to everyone involved at Wisbech, really enjoyed my time there but time for a new challenge."
About those staying, Whaley said: "We hope we can get Layton higher up the field this season so he can use his technical ability to be more of a creative influence for us. Liam is a big part of the dressing room and his experience at this level will be really important to us.
"Sam is a massive presence for us in the middle of the pitch. He's such a good player at this level and is critical to our progression this season.
"After a brilliant first season at Step 4, last season will have been disappointing for Danny, but he offers something different to the other midfielders and should complement them perfectly.
"Jay never really got the chance to prove what he's capable of with us at the end of last season. Now he's fit and confident, it should be a good season for him."
Talks are still ongoing with other members of last season's squad, including captain Sam Spencer.
