Wisbech Town manager disappointed with defensive display at AFC Mansfield

Wisbech Town manager Alex Street was unhappy with his side’s defensive display in a 3-3 draw in the Premier Division North clash at AFC Mansfield on Saturday.

Street saw his side spurn a two-goal lead after the opening ten minutes to eventually draw the game 3-3 in Nottinghamshire.

“We started the game excellently, creating two good chances and scoring two good goals.

“It looked as though we thought we’d cracked it after that and thought we were better than what we actually were, thinking we were going to dominate the next 80 minutes but it doesn’t work like that.

“We defended so well in the games against Skegness, Belper and Sleaford, so to come here and concede three goals like we did I’m bitterly disappointed.

“At restarts I’ve told the players that we need to get people in and defend our box but we just didn’t do that and we’ve allowed a guy a free shot.”

“Dan (George) made some good saves and in the end we showed some good character to come back and get a draw.”

The Fenmen started Saturday's encounter with three new signings in their squad.

Former Corby Town and Deeping Rangers goalkeeper Dan George and ex-Lynn Under-23s defender Callum Howe both started, while Panashe Chimwardze was on the bench.

Wisbech made the perfect start when Chris Assombalonga put them 1-0 up after just six minutes with his third goal of the season.

The same player netted his fourth to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot four minutes later and put the visitors firmly in control.

However, third-from-bottom Mansfield pulled one back in the 14th minute and levelled matters in the 25th to make it 2-2 at the break.

The Bulls took the lead for the first time in the 63rd minute, only for Toby Allen to equalise for the Fenmen 13 minutes later with his ninth of the campaign to make the final score 3-3.

This weekend, Wisbech turn their attentions to a home tie in the FA Vase against Whitton United.
