Wisbech Town boss urges players to develop more of a ruthless streak after latest win in United Counties League Premier Division North
Wisbech Town manager Leon Mettam is urging his players to develop more of a ruthless streak in front of goal.
Despite seeing his side clinch their fourth successive victory in the United Counties League Premier Division North with a 2-1 win against Belper on Saturday, the Fenmen boss still feels there is move room for improvement.
Wisbech missed a catalogue of chances before limping over the line for their latest success at Fountain Fresh Park and Mettam said: "It was rubbish, very lacklustre and it felt like an end-of-season game.
"Both sides were poor on the day, you know, they were just poorer than us on the day. I find it frustrating because I've played in sides and you've got to have a ruthless streak playing to the final whistle of the season and we just don't seem to have that.
"It's a win, yes, but it's the way we got it. We should have been out of sight as we probably had enough chances to win 10 games.
"I said to the players in there that they've got to be more ruthless as it could have ended two-all and I would have been beside myself.
"We were lucky that we got away with it. Players moan that they don't get the service, but the lads have had chance after chance today.
"Even if we'd taken half of them we would have still been out of sight, but missing them just gave Belper a chance to get their tails up.
"They wanted to fight everyone at the end because that's what we reduced them to, which is a rubbish mentality. Each to their own, but that's not what we do here at our club."
Rob Conyard gave the Fenmen took the lead from the penalty spot four minutes before the break at Fountain Fresh Park.
Amir Ward doubled the home side's lead midway through the second half and before Archie Williams pulled a goal five back for Belper five minutes later.
Mettam added: "There were loads of positives out there, it's just our decision-making at times when we do things and when we don't do them.
"We can be pleasing on the eyes when we want to be but at times when we try to do that we give the ball away.
"It's so frustrating when I know what we can do. I can see it all the time, it's just a case of getting over the line now.
"We've got three games left to play but if we play like we did today we'll end up with no points."
The Wisbech boss will have to have a head count before entering a final gruelling week of the campaign with three games in the space of six days – starting with a trip to Leicester Nirvana tomorrow night.
"The skipper (Kegan Everington) has gone down and looks like he's done his calf so that's probably him done for the season now," said Mettam.
"Obviously we've had Lewis (Baughen) leave the club and I also had to Brooksy (Danny Brooks) on as Owen Howard's ankle still isn't right.
"We're going into the last three games of the season but I don't have options. We'll have to go with what I've got."
