Hayes: Wisbech Town 'too nice' when losing lead twice in Emirates FA Cup draw with Ely City
Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round
Wisbech Town 2 Ely City 2
The Fenmen lost the lead twice in Saturday’s home tie so will have to replay at Ely next week.
Layton Maddison gave the Fenmen a first-half lead in a tight contest.
Steve Holder equalised on the hour, but it looked as though Declan Rogers’ 75th minute penalty had won the tie. However, Tom Williams secured a replay for the Robins in the 85th minute.
Ex-Fenman Ryan Harnwell came off the bench for the visiting Thurlow Nunn League side.
Manager Seb Hayes said Wisbech should have won the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium tie, but failed to close it out: “I want to play good football but when you’re winning a game of football, do the ugly stuff,” he commented.
“With ten minutes to go, just kick it into the corners, turn them, kick it up the pitch, force them to play direct.
“We’re too nice. I said to them we’re not ruthless enough. It’s all about winning. Everyone knows I’m honest. People won’t like me being honest, but I’m not going make excuses like ‘oh the referee didn’t do this’.
“We created enough chances in the game to win it, and we should have won it. That’s a fact.
“They’ve had two proper chances in the game, and they’ve scored both.
“The players have to stop being a nice team and have got to manage games better.
“Anybody who could hear me on the sidelines today heard me say get it into the corners, get it up the pitch. I’m giving them the information but it’s not being processed.
“I said to them at half-time: You haven’t done enough to have kept the shirt. The only players I can say today have enough is Layton (Maddison).
“Declan (Rogers, recent signing from Rushden) you can see he’s not had 90 minutes with Rushden but he had the quality on the ball.”
The fact Hayes and the majority of his squad are new to the club has not helped: “There’s miscommunication. That’s what happens with ta new team that hasn’t played together and they don’t trust each other,” he added.
“I don’t want to take anything away from Ely but we were the better side. But they played for each other and worked their socks off. We aren’t doing that enough.”
This draw followed a 4-0 midweek BetVictor NPL South East Division league defeat at Worksop Town, where there were starting debuts for forward Jason Bradley and attacking midfielder Rogers.
The FA Cup Preliminary Round replay is at Ely’s Demcom Stadium on Tuesday, September 3, 7.45pm KO.
