Second half goals see Wisbech bow out of FA Trophy
Wisbech Town 0, Biggleswade Town 2
FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round
Wisbech bowed out at the last qualifying round of this year's FA Trophy against opposition a step higher in the non-league pyramid.
The Fenmen started the brighter of the two teams and in a very even first half were the better side.
They maybe should have taken the lead though Dylan Edge, who was denied by a good save from Jake Alley. Avi Vieira tapped the rebound in, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.
The game changed in the second half and on 61 minutes a mistake in midfield allowed Joe Neal the opportunity to score and he calmly put the ball under the advancing Luke Pearson. Unfortunately for Wisbech a handling error by Pearson seven minutes later saw Neal add his second and effectively ended the game as a contest as Biggleswade easily saw out the last 20 minutes.
After the game, manager Brett Whaley said: "For an hour we were pleased with how we played. We were competitive and we matched them – but we were a bit disappointed to concede a goal when and how we did.
"But what was really disappointing was that we were so flat for the last 20 minutes when we really needed to step up. It was like they were a Step 3 side and we sort of accepted defeat.
"I thought the whole atmosphere was a little bit flat and quiet. We've got to get the supporters going, we're the ones who have got to give them something to cheer about.
"We were competitive and it shows how far we have come but I don't want to be a relegation side at Step 4 and want to improve.
"We can't accept defeat, no matter who we are playing against. When I really wanted us to show something we didn't quite do it today. If we had scored with 10 minutes to go we could have given it a right go. This is a really good squad of players we have now."
