Wisbech Town held to a 2-2 home draw by struggling Hucknall Town

Wisbech Town were held to a 2-2 home draw by struggling Hucknall Town this afternoon while the matches involving March Town and Parson Drove were called off because of waterlogged pitches.

The Fenmen drew 1-1 at Hucknall on the opening day of the United Counties League Premier North season but with the second-from-bottom Nottinghamshire side having picked up just five away points all season, hopes were high for three points at Fountain Fresh Park.

And the home side got off to the best possible start when striker Michael Frew – on dual registration with Stamford – placed home an Ethan Wilson ball into the box after 12 minutes.

It was 2-0 after 24 minutes when Andre Williams drove down the line and played the ball across the box to Oli Williams who scored.

The visitors got one back in the 35th minute through Samuel Smith and Wisbech led 2-1 at the break.

However, a scrappy second half performance let Hucknall back into the game and Niall Towle equalised in the second minute of added on time.

Wisbech: George, Howe, Wren, Twite, Mattless, Wilson, O. Williams, Murphy (Roberts 64), Frew (Murkin 64), Challinor (Briggs 81), A. Williams (Kacirek 77). Attendance: 191.

The result leaves Wisbech a disappointing fourth from bottom with seven games remaining. Next Saturday they entertain play-off hopefuls Melton Town.

March, whose United Counties League Premier South game at Congenhoe United was called off, remain in the final play off place, seven points clear of sixth place Newport Pagnell, with ten games to go, after the Buckinghamshire side lost 4-1 at home to second-place Aylestone Park.

The Hares are at bottom side Leicester Nirvana on Tuesday evening and then travel to play Pagnell next Saturday.

Parson Drove, whose game at home to Cornard United in the Eastern Counties First Division North was also called off, beat Swaffham Town 3-1 at home on Wednesday night. Bradley Easey with his eighth of the season, Jack Prentice on his Drove debut and sub Bryon Adiado with his third in five games got the goals.

On Wednesday night Drove are at title contenders Great Yarmouth before entertaining ninth-place Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers next Saturday.
