Wisbech Town looking safe after two wins on the bounce
What a difference a week makes in football. At 3pm last Saturday, after two heavy defeats, Wisbech Town were entrenched in a relegation battle.
But an impressive 2-1 home win against United Counties Premier North leaders Eastwood was followed up by another 2-1 win, at Kimberley Miners Welfare yesterday.
Now The Fenmen look all but safe as they travel this coming weekend to play bottom side Shirebrook Town, who have lost all ten games they have played in 2025.
“It was a massive two games for the football club and we have come through with six points out of six,” said assistant manager Ross McNeil.
“The whole group is positive now. There’s been a few tough times but we are now showing what we are all about. We’ve shown our character and that we can produce when we need to.
“The target now is consistency and to back it up at Shirebrook. We will train Tuesday and Thursday and keep the ball rolling. Momentum is key in football and we’ve generated a bit of that now.”
Kimberley are fighting for their life and were on great form going into the match, five of their six victories this season coming in their previous eight games.
They opened the scoring at The Stag Ground in the very first minute through Zak Sandhu and kept Wisbech under the cosh for the rest of the half, although their keeper was forced to make a superb 22nd-minute penalty save from Rob Conyard after the impressive Amir Ward was fouled.
The Fenmen upped their levels after the break and Conyard levelled two minutes after the restart with his sixth in 14 games since rejoining The Reds.
In the 69th minute, a second yellow card for Daniel Tuck meant The Miners were down to ten men and the visitors pressed home their one-man advantage when Amir Ward scored an 84th-minute winner with his third goal of the campaign. Wisbech are now 11 points clear of the drop zone with five games remaining.
McNeil added: “It was obviously an awful start, going one down after a minute. But we stayed in the game, with our keeper making a couple of good saves.
“Half-time was just about a few reminders. There weren’t any tea cups thrown but there were a few little things addressed and some firm words. We started the second half on the front foot and showed what we can do.
“Amir was outstanding today. He has been working hard in training and it’s starting to show. He won us the penalty and scored a great winner.
“Rob was gutted at the penalty but you’ve only got to see how he played in the second half to see what he is all about.
“Kyle Barker is getting better every game he plays and his assist for the second goal was brilliant - Amir has cut in and bent it in the top right and that’s a reward for the work he has been putting in.
“Coming back from behind to win football matches is a hard thing to do and we’ve done it twice in our last two games now and that shows character, belief, determination and passion. We stayed in the game, held our nerve and believed in what we were doing.
“It was a tough contest and the back five know they’ve been in a game - they were brilliant. Everyone put a shift in during the second half and we just upped it ten per cent more and their keeper made a couple of good saves besides the goals.
“It was a long trip for the supporters but it was a great feeling at the end to see what it means to them. They are what Wisbech Town is all about and we really appreciate them.”
