Wisbech move further away from trouble in the United Counties League Premier Division North with Shirebrook draw
Wisbech made it three games unbeaten in the league for the first time this season after a 1-1 draw at bottom-side Shirebrook Town on Saturday.
The Fenmen were forced to come from behind before clinching a point against a home outfit who had a new manager in the dugout.
Addressing the media after the game, coach Ross McNeil said: "I think they did have a bit of a new manager bounce and that showed in the first half.
"The frustration is, the lads can see what they need to do and they can see the outcomes they've had in recent weeks when they do the basics right and are disciplined with their shape, winning first and second contacts and having a positive reaction when they lost the ball.
"I don't think we did enough of that in the first half, which was a detriment to our performance and I thought Shirebrook deserved to be in the lead.
"We had a couple of decent opportunities from some set-pieces but they were on the front foot more than us.
"I think the penalty was a contentious one but it could have easily been avoided by listening to each other and we've got to do that a bit more.
"Sometimes we need to be a little more assertive and aggressive with our communication so we get the message across."
The Fenmen are now 11 points clear of the drop zone in the United Counties League Premier North remaining, although The Fenmen have played two games more than most of the teams below them.
Jack Lee Dolman gave the home side the lead from a 25th-minute penalty this afternoon but Kern Miller equalised for Wisbech after 57 minutes.
"We were much better second half, although I still don't think we were great," added McNeil.
"It was a great delivery for our goal and a great header from Kern, who has been outstanding for us since he came in.
"It's another point on the board and it's the first time we've gone three games unbeaten all season so we're heading in the right direction.
"It's about our mentality. We've got the talent but if you don't do those things I spoke about right then you are going to become unstuck.
"It happened in the first half here and it also happened in the first half at home to Kimberley too."
Luke Hipwell's side now has a weekend off before travelling to Lincoln United on March 29.
