Wisbech Town manager looks for away points after his side stretch unbeaten home run to six games
Wisbech Town manager Alex Street has set his side the target of improving on their poor away record as they head into the final games of the season.
The Fenmen stretched their unbeaten home run to six games when they held promotion-chasing Melton Town at Fountain Fresh Park on Saturday -but Street’s men have just five away points all season, their solitary win being at Belper Town in December.
Four of Wisbech's final six league games are away, and after the encouraging draw against the fourth-place Leicestershire side, Street said: “That’s six unbeaten at home now. It doesn’t matter if they’re draws or wins as we are trying to be hard to beat at home and it is working.
“Now we have to try and get some away points, starting at Kimberley Miners Welfare on Saturday. It would be nice to end the season on a high going into the (Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup) Final against Cambridge City.”
On Saturday, Melton took the lead with a penalty after 23 minutes but Wisbech levelled a minute before the break with a great free kick from distance by Ethan Wilson, who along with Stamford loan player Joe Burgess went off injured.
The point keeps the Fenmen fourth from bottom but guarantees their safety for next season.
Street was delighted with his side’s performance against Melton, adding: “They are a good side. They move the ball well and their movement off the ball is excellent and that’s hard to play against if you don’t talk and organise.
“They had some good opportunities but didn’t test Dan George that much. Ethan dived in to give away the penalty but other than that they didn’t cause us too many problems.
“Over all we’ve done really well. We’ve frustrated them on a tough pitch and I’m delighted Ethan has got his first goal for the club as it meant a lot to him.
“In the second half we showed a lot of maturity, the subs got stuck in and made a good impact and we created chances, but a draw is a fair result.
“I’m over the moon with the man management, my defence were very good again and dealt with a good side very well.”
