Tributes paid to Wisbech Town club historian who dies after battle with cancer

Tributes have been pouring in for Wisbech Town club historian Gordon Smith who has died following a short illness.

Mr Smith wrote several books about Wisbech Town FC and local football and was also very active on the Fenland darts scene.

A statement from the Fenmen read: "Wisbech Town Football Club are saddened to announce the passing of club historian Gordon Smith.

"Gordon was involved with the club for many years, developing a wealth of knowledge regarding the club’s history.

"During the Centenary season (2020-2021), Gordon worked closely with Wisbech Museum to create “100 Years of Wisbech Town FC”, which is still available to view online on the Museum’s website.

"He has published many books over the years, full of photographs allowing us to learn and for some, remember the memories of WTFC. Gordon was very proud of his work.

"He gave up many hours of his time to record keeping. Over 35 years ago, he took over from Martin Davis as club historian and continued Martin’s work, allowing the club to continue to keep decent records dating back over 60-70 years, if not longer.

"If you ever had a question about a player, Gordon was the man to ask.

"On matchdays, Gordon would be found in our hospitality room, giving a warm welcome to our visitors for the day and keeping our match officials on side.

"His kind personality and knowledge of the club made him a prime candidate for hosting and looking after our guests, who often wanted to learn about the history of the club.

"On behalf of everyone at the club, we would like to thank Gordon for the dedication he gave to Wisbech Town FC, he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Gordon Smith."

Chairman Paul Brenchley said: "He was very active in the football club right up until about a month before he died.

"He was always there on a match day, chatting to the opposition and enjoying a coffee and a biscuit."

Club secretary Spenny Larham added: "Gordon was programme editor for several years and when I took over from him in 2004, he continued to supply stats and articles for many years.

"To call him the font of all WTFC knowledge didn't do him justice. He'll be sorely missed by everyone at the club."
