Another win for Wisbech

Wisbech 2, Skegness 1

Uhlsport United Counties League Premier Division North

Wisbech are finding Step 5 football much more to their liking after picking up their second win in three league games against a Skegness team that contained a number of former Fenmen, writes ADAM FAIRBROTHER.

Skegness started the game brightly and could have been in front as early as the second minute as Wisbech failed to clear their lines, but even with the majority of the possession they were forced to shoot from distance, with nothing troubling supporters' player of the match Luke Pearson.

On 18 minutes the deadlock was broken by Kyle Onyon, who followed up his goals in Saturday's FA Cup with another one when he headed home an excellent cross by Mo Janneh after good work from new loan signing Theo Hudson. Wisbech doubled their lead 15 minutes later when Janneh slotted the ball home from 20 yards into the bottom corner.

Wisbech were comfortable in the second half, only to be undone by a bizarre refereeing decision when the man in the middle allowed play to continue even though the assistant was waving his flag for a foul on a Wisbech player. Wisbech stopped, expecting the ref to stop play, but Declan Johnson fired home on 73 minutes.

Wisbech held out and were helped by Skegness player George Hobbins being sent off for a professional foul on 87 minutes.

After the match, manager Leon Mettam said: "I'm more than happy to beat a really tough team like Skegness, who finished fifth last year. The lads stood up to everything that came their way and defended for their lives.

"We also scored two good goals and now it's three wins from four games and I'm so happy. I could not have asked for any more. It's a dream start.

"We are still short of bodies and relying on people helping me out at the minute but the lads I do have are running their hearts out.

"Mo Janneh has done so well for us so far with three goals and an assist, Kieran Hamilton has been superb. I'm proud of them all.We want to make this a horrible place to come. It's not in my make-up to let teams come here and roll us over.

"The fans were brilliant too, and very vocal. They've gone a long time without having much to cheer about. Fans want to see you fighting for the shirt, and if you can add a bit of magic, that's even better."
