Wisbech Town show their soft side in 5-2 defeat at Newark Town

Wisbech Town coach Ross McNeil believes his team must stop conceding soft goals if they are to start making an impression on the UCL Premier Division South table.

The Fenmen were hoping to kick on following back-to-back home wins last week but were brought back down to earth by a 5-2 defeat at Newark Town on Saturday.

McNeil said: "It's frustrating. It was a terrible time to concede and it came from another long throw. We've got to work on defending them, not just the first contact but the second and third.

Toby Allen was on target from the penalty spot at the weekend.

"That's something as a management team that we have to address as we can't keep conceding soft goals.

"The two penalties I'm not even going to speak about as there's stuff we could have done better in the build-up to them before the decision has been made."

Wisbech conceded on the stroke of half time but Elliot Foster’s sixth of the season made it 1-1 seconds after the restart.

The home side scored twice around the hour mark to make it 3-1 but Toby Allen’s fourth of the campaign from the penalty spot brought the score back to 3-2.

However, goals in the 68th and 80th minutes sealed their fate.

"The second half was frustrating," admitted McNeil.

"We're not happy with the manner of our display. We've set our standards high in recent weeks but we were nowhere near those kinds of levels today.

"If you don't hit your levels collectively then you are not going to get many points in this league and that's another reminder that we caused our own problems.

"When you concede from a long throw, get penalised for two soft penalties and concede possession on the edge of the 18-yard box that's not acceptable."

Wisbech Town have made two new signings ahead of their crucial clash against Ashby Ivanhoe at Fountain Fresh Park on Saturday.

The Fenmen have signed forward players Ryan Lennon and Tom Papworth-Boston.

Speaking on the club's new arrivals, manager Luke Hipwell said: "Ryan (Lenny) is a local player that I have been tracking for some time and I’m delighted to finally get him.

"He can play anywhere along the front, links play well but his main threat is running off the shoulder & is an excellent finisher. He will be a fans’ favourite.

"Tom joins from Soham Town Rangers and is a player I have been monitoring closely since he caught my eye earlier in the season.

"He's a player with excellent potential who can play anywhere across the front line, both footed and has an eye for goal."

Wisbech Town: Lakin, Wilson (Nicholson 45), Arber (Zaluzinkskis 45), Harris, Mattless, Murphy, Setchell (Cavozzi 45), Williams, Foster, Allen, Ward (Balding 78). Star man: Sam Harris.

Attendance:175.
