Wisbech manager says his side will give everything to clinch relegation play-off place

Wisbech manager Allan Ross says he will do everything he can to make sure his side reach the relegation play-offs at the end of the season.

Four games into his tenure, Ross sees the second-from-bottom Fenmen 14 points from safety with just six games remaining, but only three points away from the play off place.

The side finishing in that 18th position will face a one-off home fixture against a Step 5 club to secure their Step 4 status. At the moment, Gresley Rovers or Hinckley Leicester Road seem the most likely opponents.

"I'm a positive guy. I love football and live and breathe the sport. Every moment of the day when I am not working, my commitment is to Wisbech Town and I will give absolutely everything to make sure we are in the play-offs," Ross told the Citizen after Saturday's 3-2 home defeat to Cambridge City (match report here).

"But whatever division we are in next season, I can now set foundations with the players we already have here. We still do have a chance of retaining out Step 4 status, it's just going to be very hard.

"I hope I have the opportunity in the summer to regroup and get the type of player in that wants to play high, energetic football and give 100% commitment."

Of the final six games, two are at home to title chasing Chasetown and Ilkeston Town, with a trip also to play-off contenders Belper Town.

So the only games Wisbech can realistically hope to get points from are at home to Sporting Khalsa next Saturday and the crunch six-pointers away at Histon Town – who currently occupy the play-off place – on April 9, and away at bottom side Soham Town Rangers on Bank Holiday Monday, April 18th.

On Saturday's defeat, Ross added: "Leading 2-1, there were lots of smiles at half time, the atmosphere felt really good and we felt we were going to go on and score the third.

"But we didn't get out of the changing rooms for the second half and we self destructed. All the momentum and the good play we had and the resilience we showed was lost. It was so disappointing.

"Passing and decision making were not on point in the second half and we looked a little panicky and desperate. When we were chasing it, to be honest, we did not have enough quality to score.

"The players are trying and there is a lot of energy and commitment but we are going to struggle now as the transfer window is closed, and we only have around 11 fit players at the moment to face Sporting Khalsa."
