Great win for Wisbech Town but March Town lose while Parson Drove game postponed

Wisbech Town won their first match of the new year this afternoon 4-2 against Heanor Town, but March Town crashed to a 4-2 defeat at Rugby Borough, while Parson Drove’s game was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

The Fenmen received a pre-game boost when club legend Mel Mattless returned to the fray on Friday, coming in as assistant to manager Alex Street.

Heanor Town were Wisbech’s visitors in the United Counties League Premier Division North this afternoon, and the home side opened the scoring in the 25th minute when former Crowland Town player Harry Grigas, who signed for the club this week, drilled one into the roof of the net.

Keaton August equalised for the visitors two minutes before the break but Toby Allen restored the home lead after 64 minutes from the penalty spot with his 16th of the season. Five minutes later, Andre Williams made it 3-1 after being put through by Grigas.

Heanor’s keeper was sent off for dissent in the 72nd minute but James Taylor pulled one back for The Lions with six minutes remaining. However, sub Rob Conyard rounded off a great team performance and sealed the 4-2 victory with his seventh of the campaign in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Wisbech now leapfrog Heanor into tenth place.

March slip to fourth place in the United Counties League Premier Division South after letting a two-goal lead slip in a 4-2 defeat at Rugby Borough, who climb a place to 14th.

However, the home side pulled one back before the break through Adam Shaw and then scored three in the second half through Shaw and two from Justin Marsden to win the game 4-2, Adam Brumby being sent off for the visitors after the fourth goal.

Over in the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League First Division North, Parson Drove’s home game with second place Stanway Pegasus was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.
