Wisbech Rugby Club 1st XV beat Oundle at Harecroft Road
A late fixture change failed to stop Wisbech in their tracks as they sealed yet another emphatic win.
The 1st XV entertained a spirited Oundle U23/2nd XV at Harecroft Road on Saturday, who had stepped in as late replacements after the Fenland side’s scheduled opponents called off.
A close affair was expected as Oundle, like Wisbech, have been enjoying a successful season.
But Wisbech were first to get out of the blocks - and they asserted their physicality on the game with dominance at breakdowns and scrums and some swift hands from their centres.
Some forceful lines from their loose forwards led to first half tries from Raimondas Vinksna, Will Boreham and a brace from Luke Green.
Wisbech came out well in the second half as well, and some line breaks and clever kicking saw the Men in Red take a further two opportunities with tries through Solomon Prestidge and poacher Sam Anderson.
The home side did go down to 13 players through injury the last 15 minutes, allowing a spirited Oundle side to hit back with two good late consolation tries to leave the final score at 31-10 in favour of the Men in Red.
It was a high tempo match played in fantastic spirit.
Notable performances came from 17-year-old Ty Tooke, who carried well and with a clever rip secured a fantastic turnover in defence.
Three 20-year-olds in George Overland, Owen Ketteringham and Luke Hare impressed too, with the latter adding some direct power and aggression.
However, the Wisbech Round Table man of the match, selected by the opposition, went to Brad Williams for his 80 minute tireless display.
The Wisbech 1st XV welcome Cottenham Renegades this Saturday in a rearranged match in the first of their four crucial remaining league fixtures.
