March Town off to a winning start in United Counties League Premier Division South

Joint boss Seb Hayes had no complaints about the sending-off of Jonah Gill as March Town overcame the loss of their goalkeeper to open the season with three big points on Saturday.

Gill saw red for bringing down the last man in the second half of their United Counties League Premier Division South opener at home to Newport Pagnell.

Skipper Danny Emmington donned the gloves for the remainder of the half as the Hares held onto a precious 1-0 victory at the GER.

Hayes said: "Yeah Jonah has pulled him so we got lucky and then from there we've managed it brilliantly, so we've got the luck.

"You know, we thought it was outside the area but they've missed the penalty and from there that gives us something to play with. "Once that happens, we had our 'let's keep our shape plan', which is plan B and it has worked wonderfully."

Hayes had special praise for match-winner Josh Moreman, who netted the only goal of a tight affair in the first half.

"It was a quality finish by Josh," he said.

"He only had one, possibly two, chances and he took one. That's almost what you expect from him and what he's there for.

"He's done it, you know, from Step 6 up to Step 3 and he's a great finisher. He has taken his pre-season form into the season and he's now scored his last five games.

"He could have had a couple more like second-half as well, so yeah, that's that's why we signed Josh to do that and to score goals in big games because he's done it throughout his career."

Hayes revealed the management team had asked the players for a bit more intensity - despite going into the break with a slender lead.

"We weren't happy first half with our performance, we just didn't move the ball quick enough," he said.

"Although I thought we were in control we just didn't play with the tempo we had all pre-season.

"We played with some tempo, but obviously we're playing against a quality side to side that's been to the FA Vase final two years on the trot.

"I know they've changed with the new manager and stuff, but the players they have signed them, they are a top team.

"We just asked for a bit more intensity with the ball and to move it quicker, but also that we could use Craig (Gillies) in behind a bit more as well.

"But because of their press in the second half we weren't able to play the football we wanted to really and then obviously the sending-off. has just killed it really.

"It was an exercise of shape, more like a training session for us, the last 40 minutes."

The Hares' joint chief admitted that the victory meant everything to the squad of players.

"Even though it was our first game of the season, we've celebrated like we won the FA Cup because it means everything to us.

"That's because last season, you know, we didn't finish the league campaign how we wanted to and we said today and we wanted to put that right in an instant.

"We've got Histon, Wisbech and we've got Daventry so that's massive for us.

"It is a building block for us to build on because now we know we can outplay a team with the ball and we can outfight them without it."
