March Town manager praises presence of King’s Lynn, Bedford and Wisbech goalkeeper during short spell at the club

March Town manager Ash Taylor hopes goalkeeper Alex Street's short-term stay will lead to a long-term gain for the rest of his playing squad.

The former King's Lynn Town, Bedford Town and Wisbech Town shotstopper kept a clean sheet in his last game for the Hares while deputising for regular custodian Jonah Gill who is available for selection again this weekend.

Street was in commanding form between the posts during March's 3-0 victory over Histon at the GER on Saturday and boss Taylor hopes his will presence, albeit short, will benefit his squad.

Taylor said: "Peds (Alex Street) made some important saves for us and we made some important blocks and defended our box really well in the first half.

"I've just said thank you to him in the dressing room and the lads gave him a clap and stuff.

"The way he communicates with the backline he just makes the game easier for himself and when the players do something good he makes them feel on top of the world.

"That's a really good quality to have and I can see why he's been into management.

"Those kind words and that type of encouragement to players gives them that extra five or ten per cent so thank you to him for coming in.

"He's been excellent for us and I hope some of the lads have picked up some bits from him as he's played at a much higher level and hopefully they've taken some nuggets away from him that they can use in the future."

The Hares made it five home wins on the bounce in the UCL Premier South with an excellent display against the ninth-placed Stutes at the GER.

Josh Burrows fired Ash Taylor's side into a 1-0 lead at the interval before Toby Allen scored a second and Burrows netted his second of the match to complete an excellent 3-0 win.

With Rugby Borough losing 3-0 at home to Daventry Town and Aylestone Park's home game against Hinckley being abandoned, the Hares are now just three points behind the teams sitting second and third in the table.

"We were five points ahead of them going into the game so had we lost the gap would have been two and obviously it would be eight if we won so it was hyped up as a big game towards the play-offs," said Taylor.

"As far as performances go, I thought we were excellent the whole match.

"I said in the interview last week it was about finding the level and consistency of our second-half performance against Pagnell and the lads have done that for 90 minutes.

"To be honest it was a deserved 3-0 win. They gave us a few issues in the first half and probably could have scored one or two."

On his side's three goals, Taylor added: "Toby (Allen) got a goal and an assist and both Burrows (Josh) and him were right amongst it today.

"Josh has scored two excellent goals and he loves getting forward and getting into the game.

"Toby's header was some header and I don't think you'll see a better header all year.

"There's not a lot of speed on the ball but he's got up and gets power on it. I didn't even know it was going in, so that's some header.

"It was nice to score three good goals today rather than scrappy ones with how the pitches have been."

On Tuesday night, March Town are back in cup action as they host runaway league leaders St Neots in the semi-finals of the Hinchingbrooke Cup (7.45pm) - a competition they won last season.

On Saturday, they travel to Northampton Sileby Rangers in the league.

March Town v Histon: Street, Henderson, Saunders, Brumby, Emmington, Green, Burrows (Escorcio), Foy, Allen (Gillies), Tait (Biggs), Cotton (Williams).
