March boss Brett Whaley said: “Jack Friend will be disappointed not to score but if he doesn’t, then one of the others will do.

“It’s nice to have a lot of different goalscoring options.”

Gillies notched, the visitors levelled then the striker converted a penalty after Saunders was fouled. Then Gillies completed his hat-trick early in the second half.

“They did have a spell just before their goal for 20 or 25 minutes when they were on top,” Whaley added. "They were a very young side but very talented. They had a goal in the middle of that in the first half.

“We scored again and in the second half we were pretty dominant. We were better in the second half than we were in the first. In the end 6-1 probably wasn’t a fair reflection of the game but it was comfortable.

“The next goal at 1-1 was quite important because they had confidence in themselves. With young players, that made them a bit more dangerous. We lost a bit of composure but we got that back just before our second goal.

“I kind of felt going into half-time leading 2-1 and not playing that great, that we had ability to step it up and that’s what happened.”

He added: “Lewis Hilliard (new signing) was very good: he controlled play for us.”

Tarren Moxon (away for Christmas), Jack Rawson (suspended) and Tom McLeish (injured) should return next weekend at eighth-spot Ipswich Wanderers.

• March Town announced that club stalwart Ray Bennett has passed away.

The club tweeted: "Ray Bennett (Grandad) passed away peacefully in the early hours of this morning surrounded by his loving family.

"Ray was the club's secretary and treasurer for many years. All our thoughts are with his family at this sad time."
