March Town beat Godmanchester Rovers in United Counties League Premier Division South

March Town continued their recent resurgence with a 2-0 Bank Holiday Monday triumph over Godmanchester Rovers.

The Hares came into the game right off the back of a thrilling 6-4 win at GNG Oadby Town on Saturday, and another three points edged them back in front of Coventry United in the United Counties League Premier Division South after they lost at home to table-toppers Coventry Sphinx earlier today.

Sam Green opened the scoring for Ashley Taylor's side, and they looked comfortable throughout proceedings. A well-worked team move was rounded off by Lewis Hilliard to cap a fine performance.

"Obviously nice to get a home win. It's been too long, really, for us not to win at home after being so good at home for so long," Taylor told the Citizen.

"It wasn't the best of games. The conditions obviously made it a bit tough with the wind and stuff, but two excellent goals.

"I thought we played some really good stuff at times. It could have been better, but two excellent goals, three points and a clean sheet, which is decent."

It's now four wins in five for March, after picking up none in their previous eight league fixtures.

Taylor was particularly pleased with the rarity at which goalkeeper Charlie Congreve was called into action, and perhaps even more so with the way his players bought into his urges to slow things down at the right moments.

"We spoke about us being a little bit more calm in possession and building our play. Greeny's strike is fantastic, a really good finish," he added.

"The second one was nice to watch - I look forward to watching that one back. We just spoke about it at half-time, not trying to force the play too much, be a little bit more calm and wait for the right moment.

"We did that - the timing of Harry Edwards' run on the overlap was fantastic.

"It's nice to get a clean sheet. Obviously after Saturday conceding four goals, but we scored six, it's nice to get a clean sheet.

"We'll look to build on that going into the back end of the season with big games coming up.

"There's obviously a semi-final coming up and a few games in the league to try and finish as high as we can."

The Hares were without top goalscorer Jack Friend, who pulled his hamstring at the weekend and could face a spell on the sidelines.

"We're not quite sure how long he's going to be. We need to speak to him, but it's not looking great to be honest," Taylor said.

But if today's performance is anything to go by, the boss will be quietly confident of both sealing a top seven spot and mounting a late challenge for sixth place.

This Saturday's clash with Coventry United could prove to be the biggest game of their season. A win would move them four points clear of their opponents having played a game more, but a defeat will leave them a point behind with just one league game left to play.

On his aspirations, Taylor said: "I think if we can finish in the top seven, maybe push for a top six position. We're currently eighth, but I think top six or top seven is a good first season for us.

"New league, getting to know new teams, I'm happy with that.

"Obviously we've had a spell where it's been really difficult. We've had to come through it, but that happens.

"In football there's going to be tough times, and the main thing is we stick together as a group, which we've done and we've come through it.

"Now that's another win, so from the last five games now we've won four. We're starting to click again going into the back end of the season, which is good to see."
