March Town Reserves hit the top spot

March Town Reserves moved to the top of the Cambs County League Senior A division with a 5-3 win at Bluntisham Rangers on Saturday.

Two goals from Connor Bancans, two from sub Liam Monaghan and one from Josh Bryant did the damage as The Hares reached the summit, albeit having played four games more than second-place Eaton Socon Reserves.

Kieran Daplyn’s men led 2-0 within ten minutes before being pegged back and also went 3-1 up before going in at the break leading 3-2.

The home side equalised in the second half but Monaghan scored twice in the final ten minutes to seal the win.

Daplyn said: “Our first game back after three weeks was always going to be difficult but we showed a will to win against very gutsy opponents.”

Few other games beat the freezing conditions, but in the Premier Division, second-from-bottom Wisbech St Mary lost their relegation six-pointer 2-0 at Witchford 96.

Benwick Athletic (Christchurch) and Chatteris Town Reserves drew their bottom four clash 1-1 in 1B, David Jackson scoring for the home side and Elliot Batizovszky notching for the visitors.

Wisbech St Mary Reserves, of 2B, avoided a potential banana skin when they triumphed 2-1 at 4C outfit AEK United in the North Cambs Junior Cup. In the same competition, fellow 2B outfit Manea United won 4-1 at home against Peterborough League Division One side Wisbech Town Reserves.

Wisbech St Mary B moved within a point of 4C leaders AEK when they beat Brampton and Buckden Reserves 4-1, while mid-table Wisbech Town Acorns lost 2-1 at home to Mepal and Sutton Reserves, Cody Martin scoring but Cory Grimes seeing red.

In the Premier Division of the Peterborough League third-place Whittlesey Athletic Reserves were thrashed 7-0 at home by leaders Uppingham Town, while Leverington Sports moved away from the relegation places with a 2-1 win at Sawtry, Kieran Hamilton scoring his tenth of the campaign and Dan Palmer also on target.

Long Sutton Athletic stay bottom of Division One despite a 2-1 home win over Park Farm Pumas, Jack Greenacre scoring both.
