March to step up search for new faces after Wisbech claim bragging rights with friendly win
March Town United manager Ashley Taylor says the club is actively seeking new signings after losing two key players a month before the new season.
The Hares suffered a 1-0 defeat against Wisbech last night in front of a crowd of around 350.
Helkias Acheampong scored the only goal of the friendly in the second half.
After the game, March boss Taylor confirmed the club has lost the services of Harvey Henderson and Josh Burrows to Step 4 St Neots and Bourne respectively.
“I can say this now – we’ve lost Hendo and Burrows,” Taylor said.
“We wish them both well. It’s been done the right way, and we’d never stand in the way of a player moving up.”
The timing of the exits, however, has left March short on numbers and adjusting plans late in pre-season.
“They came a bit out of the blue, so the plan had to change,” said Taylor.
“It’s difficult right now, to be honest. There’s a lot of competition for players and a lot of money being thrown about, but we’re doing what we can.”
The Hares trialled a new player against the Fenmen and are hopeful of securing his signature soon.
“I thought he did really well tonight,” Taylor said.
“Hopefully, we’ll have one or two more in for Saturday’s game.”
Despite the defeat, Taylor remained upbeat about the performance, praising his side’s defensive organisation and overall improvement from the weekend reverse at Boston Town.
“There’s definitely lots of positives tonight in comparison to the game we had on Saturday,” Taylor said.
“We spoke about certain things we needed to do better and, generally speaking, the shape, the organisation, and communication were really good.”
However, the Hares boss admitted that creativity in the final third remains an issue, something he’s keen to address quickly.
“We weren’t creative enough around the box for what I want in this team,” he added.
“That’s something we need to look at and work on.”
March's next test comes at home against Grantham Town on Saturday.
“Pre-season is about finding out where we’re at,” Taylor said.
“We’ve had tough games — Boston, Wisbech, and now Grantham — but I’d rather that than winning meaningless games. These tests show us what we need to work on.”
Wisbech - with three successive friendly wins under their belt - travel to Gorleston.
