High-flying Wisbech Sparrow brothers chase Banger glory at King’s Lynn

After last weekend’s hugely successful international Heinegone meeting, this week’s racing action at the Adrian Flux Arena, King’s Lynn, returns to a domestic focus.

The extremely popular 1500cc Bangers East Anglian team championship takes centre stage on Saturday night (6pm) with support coming from 1300cc Stock Cars and Junior Bangers.

Wisbech’s James Licquorice was a race winner in the similar Two-Litre Bangers team event a fortnight ago and so will aim to lead his No Mates squad to success on this occasion.

They will face strong competition from defending champions Team Crunchers and nearly 20 other four-man teams, some of whom are travelling long distances to take part in the meeting.

The 1500cc team championship has been highly acclaimed for providing some fantastic action over the years. With local bragging rights up for grabs, that theme looks set to continue.

The 1300cc Stock Car entry includes a host of Wisbech-based drivers. Among them are brothers Simon and Scott Sparrow who are having terrific seasons, Simon having won three meeting finals. A big score at Sheffield last time out catapulted Wisbech veteran Kevin McClagish to third in the national points standings, although he is still chasing his first race win of the season.

Wisbech’s English champion, Wayne Cottrill, leads the Junior Banger entry list, alongside fellow Wisbech drivers Brad Bartrum, Andy Betts and Lenny Murkin.

Last weekend’s Heinegone event provided an incredibly spectacular farewell to retiring Dutch superstar Pieter ‘Peewee’ Leistra, with around 160 Unlimited Bangers in action.

Wisbech driver Nicky Young turned out a 1952 Humber Pullman limousine which was named one of the six cars of the meeting, as a huge number of limousines, hearses, American cars and classics also raced. Outwell’s Joe Barrett, meanwhile, achieved the rare feat of winning a race at the wheel of a hearse, in his case a Jaguar X300.
