With a touch of spring in the air expectations were high for those fishing the last March AC open match of the season, writes Ken Wade.

The Old Nene through the Fenland town has been in great form since the turn of the year and once again it did not disappoint.

Top rod from the end peg along the by-pass section was Steve Slater, his all-out approach for tench paid off handsomely.

Feeding heavily with chopped worm and caster Steve caught eight big tench and topped them up with around five pound of rudd to finish with 31lb 5oz.

Second place went to March angler Paul Constable.

He drew right at the other end of the match length and fished a groundbait and pinkie approach, netting a good skimmer along with a small tench and 14lb of roach, weighing in 18lb 4oz.

Mick Burrell came third with 16lb 7oz, followed by match organiser Bob Fitzjohn with 14lb 5oz.

Over at Townsend Fishery the Saturday pairs match saw anglers spread across the Woodpecker and Kingfisher Pools.

Top rod on Woodpecker was Dave Priestly. He put a level 43lb to the scales taken on the long pole and feeder. Similar tactics saw the in-form Ashley Kinsey topping Kingfisher with 32lb.

Pairs winners were Geoff Arnold, he drew peg 2 on the Woodpecker pool and Bob Coulson was on peg 29 on the Kingfisher Lake. They scored four points and won with a total weight of 55lb 4oz.

Runners-up and just missing out on first place on weight were Tony Chapman on Kingfisher Lake and Colin Begbie fishing Woodpecker pool.

They also had four points in total but with a combination weight of 43lb 6oz. The next pairs match at the fishery will be on April 4.

Sunday’s open match on the Kingfisher Lake saw local rod Steven Hillman take a good net of skimmers from peg 18, weighing in 36lb 7oz, all taken on the long pole with pellet.

Fishery boss Colin Begbie came second with 25lb 12oz fishing the same tactics with 20lb 6oz taken on a small maggot feeder.

Third place went to Ray Cook with 20lb 6oz. Bright sunshine but strong winds greeted the anglers fishing the first Saturday open match on the Magpie Pool at Rookery Farm Fishery, Pidley.

First home and booking his place in the two day final in August was Jack Chenel, using pellet and maggots down the edge and 12 metres for a mixed bag of stockies, barbel and chub weighing 52lb 6oz from peg 13. Ian Warby came second on 44lb 12oz with John Millard third with 31lb 6oz.

This Saturday the qualifier will be on Magpie again draw 9am, fishing 10.30am till 4.30pm

The first Reel People Spring League match got under way recently at Buttonhole Fishery. First was Ted Ward with 35lb 2oz.

Surprisingly he was the only angler to put a net of carp together, he caught on a small feeder.

Runner-up was Brian Ogden. He had 31lb of silverfish on the pole with caster. Dennis Sambridge was third on 25lb 2oz followed by Tom Mitchell with 17lb 6oz.
