Huge nets recorded on Fenland waters despite conditions

Anglers on Fenland waters have reported huge nets of bream and tench despite conditions being far from ideal at the start of the new season, writes Ken Wade.

Tony McGregor caught close to 100lb of bream on the Twenty Foot Drain at Goosetree Corner, while at Shepherdson’s Bridge, Dan Hall took a fine net of bream and tench.

March rod Bob Fitzjohn had a very big weight of bream from Chain Bridge on the Twenty Foot Drain.

Club matches are in full swing over at Tydd Gote Angling Club with some very respectable turn-outs for the club’s regular matches.

In the Thursday match, Colin Gibbons came out on top, followed by Andy Greenwood and Andy Harrison.

Club stalwart Dave Williams topped the honours in Sunday’s match along the North Level drain.

In the latest Townsend Lakes open fished on the Cuckoo Canal pool it was Nigel Wright leading the way putting a huge 252lb 4oz net of carp to the scales, taken from peg 19. Anglers struggled for bites during the Fenland Rods match at Rookery Waters on the Jay Lake, which was won by John Garner.

The same lake was used for the big £1,000 qualifying open the day before which was won from Ben Townsend’s unfancied peg of 15 with a magnificent total of 156lb 10oz.

Runner-up on his return to the fishery after a six-year absence was Lee Thornton from peg 34, who booked his place in the August final.

In the Thursday £1,000 qualifying open on Magpie Lake, Mark Pollard made it three successive wins from the fancied peg of 38.

Pollard finished ahead of Graham Welton and March rod Barry Mason.

Considering the fish were not in a feeding mood for the lads fishing the regular Tuesday evening match at Buttonhole Fishery, weights held up well.

Leading the way with 95lb of big carp was Mark Grange, he caught on meat from the margins.

Runner-up on 88lb was Nathan Goodenham, who used the method feeder, ahead of Andrew Carter with 84lb.

Spratt’s AC fished the mighty Beastie Lake on the Decoy complex with Mac Campbell leading the way with 131lb 15oz taken close in on pellet and sweetcorn.

Runner-up was Trevor Cousins, while Martin Parker was third on 82lb 7oz.
