Wisbech Town gear up for Sleaford Town game after draw with Quorn
After taking over the hot seat at Wisbech Town, manager Leon Mettam said it would take until Christmas to get a competitive side together - and he is now looking true to his word.
After drawing 2-2 at home to promotion-chasing Newark and Sherwood United in the United Counties League
Premier Division North and then gaining an impressive 2-1 win at ninth-placed Skegness Town last Wednesday, the Fenmen drew 1-1 at high-flying Quorn on Saturday afternoon.
With new signing Henry Eze starting in central defence, Wisbech took a 29th minute lead through Amir Ward and were closing in on a memorable victory when Charlie Marzano rifled an unstoppable effort past Alex Street seven minutes from time.
Wisbech now have another tough test coming up at the weekend when sixth-placed Sleaford Town are the visitors.
Player-coach Alex Street said he and Mettam will be keeping an eye on their opponents’ potential starting lineup after they received a couple of red cards in their previous game.
He said: “The way the lads are at the minute, no one bothers us. We’re not afraid of anyone.
“We’re at home, and hopefully these last three results show some of the fans - we can try to get a good crowd back at Wisbech and try to get another result, try to get three points.”
The Fenmen are now level on points with 13th-placed Belper United in the United Counties League Premier Division North standings, although they have played two games more.
However, they have moved comfortably clear of the lower reaches of the table - and will hope their impressive start to 2023 can continue with a push towards the top 12.
On the draw with Quorn, Street added: “The lads have shown great character today to come away to a team who are flying well in the league.
“They defended well for 90 minutes to be honest. The goal went in the top corner, you can’t do a lot about that - they’ve got good class.
“The lads have showed from Newark at home to Skegness away to now, they’re buying into what Metts and Brooksy are trying to achieve.
“They’ve shown a lot of character and passion to try and grind out results, and today they put everything on the line. They deserve the point.”
Following the game, manager Mettam tweeted his delight with his squad’s recent showings. He said: “What a difference seven days makes. Three unbeaten against some real tough opposition for Wisbech Town, small steps in the right direction.”
