Newmarket 6pts

Wisbech 22

Wisbech’s love affair with the RFU Junior Vase continued on Saturday with an excellent all-round team performance.

Once again coach Leonard Veenendaal worked tirelessly during the week to assemble a squad as a number of regular first choice players were not available.

“The fundamental difference between the performance prior to Christmas away to Ely in the league and our performance on Saturday was the numbers at training,” said Veenendaal.

“Only four trained prior to the Ely games but against Newmarket 90 per cent of the squad trained. It makes a big difference.”

Wisbech got their tactics spot on: the forwards completely dominated Newmarket and the set piece was solid.

Wisbech went behind to an early penalty but it was not long before the visitors went on the attack. Underfoot conditions were slippery and with a greasy ball Wisbech took their time to build momentum. Midway through the half Jacob Goat touched down from a five-metre line out. Jack Malkin converted.

A yellow card against Wisbech allowed Newmarket back into the game but the defence held and by half-time Wisbech were in control.

At the start of the second half Wisbech continued to dominate as the rain stopped and the backs looked to run the ball. Joe England scored in the corner. A Newmarket penalty reduced the arrears before Goat scored his second try again after Wisbech had won a five-metre lineout.

Greg Brownlow, playing his first game of the season, scored the fourth try when he drove over from the back of the scrum.

Captain Solomon Prestidge was made man of the match for an excellent individual performance.

Wisbech entertain unbeaten league leaders Southwold on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
