Leverington Sports Ladies were beaten by Cambridge University at the weekend
A valiant comeback fight was in vain as Leverington Sports Ladies were beaten 4-2 at home to Cambridge University.
Leverington had played out an entertaining draw with a Newmarket Ladies Development side last weekend, but were pinned back from the off against an away side that came flying out of the blocks.
Another makeshift back four stayed firm during the opening stages, with Katie Garner and Amy Newell impressing at the heart of defence.
However, their resilience came undone on the half-hour mark when a lightning-quick counter attack was launched down Cambridge's right hand side.
A good finish handed the away side a 1-0 advantage.
The second didn't take too long, with a fierce strike from the edge of the box doubling their advantage just before the break.
Leverington came out for the second half much sharper, and started to fashion some openings of their own.
Sophie Swinden whipped in a free kick to the back post, and Chloe Stanborough was on hand to head home and halve the deficit.
The comeback was complete soon after, and this time it was Charlotte Wheatley's turn to deliver an excellent set piece.
Her corner found the head of Chelsea King, who nodded home at the near post.
The home side then thought they'd taken the lead, but had a goal ruled out for offside.
With both sides pushing for a winner, Jasmine Anderson Franklin pulled off some excellent saves in goal.
However, her hard work was undone when two late Cambridge strikes handed them the three points.
