Late Zeurner goal not enough as Wisbech Town beaten at Boston Town
Boston Town 2, Wisbech Town 1
United Counties League Premier Division North
A goal in each half was enough for fifth-placed Boston to beat sixth from bottom Wisbech on Saturday.
Former Fenmen Jordan Nuttell and Liam Adams did the damage with goals after eight and 51 minutes respectively, George Zeurner pulling one back three minutes from time.
Ex-Wisbech players Harry Limb and Fraser Bayliss were also in the Boston team, although former skipper Luke Wilson was missing as he was getting married.
In a dull match, Wisbech seldom threatened the home goal, with Luke Pearson being the busiest of the two keepers.
Assistant manager Danny Brooks said after the match: "There was not a lot in the game. We didn't play badly or stop running, the lads worked hard but our ball retention was horrific.
"Our final pass let us down too, we didn't create much and their keeper didn't have a save to make. The one bit of attacking quality from us in the whole game ended up with us scoring.
"Archie Wallace and Sisa Tuntulwana were superb today, but we didn't create anything and with the creative players we now have, I expect more. We will keep working hard on drilling the lads to keep the ball and until we start doing that and stop making individual mistakes, we will keep bringing on our own downfall.
"It's getting better though and we are bringing more players in, so we will just keep going."
Next Saturday there is FA Vase First Round action for Wisbech, who travel to play fellow Step 5 outfit Oxhey Jets, who play in the Combined Counties League Premier Division North.
Jets are bottom of their division and have not won a league game all season. However, they have won both their FA Vase games 3-0 at home. First they beat Easington Sports, who are mid-table in the United Counties League Premier Division South, and then they dismissed Combined Counties League Division One strugglers Penn & Tylers Green.
Loan players Sisa Tuntulwana and Joao Rangel will be ineligible for the game, but Mo Janneh, who missed the Boston game with an ankle injury, and Owen Howard, who has been out with a shoulder injury since the defeat at Heanor Town on September 17, both return.
"We're losing loan players but we have two lads coming back in, which is where we are now with a fuller squad. We had to leave two lads out at Boston as we're getting bodies in, so it is up to the lads to stake their claim for a shirt.
"Lads have got to play for their shirt if they want to play week in, week out. If they are not going to perform, other lads will take their shirts. And if too many do not perform, we will keep bringing others to the club."
