Chatteris Town are North Cambs Junior Cup winners after victory over Whittlesey Athletic
Chatteris Town won the North Cambs Junior Cup on Wednesday evening with victory over Whittlesey Athletic Reserves.
The Cambridgeshire County League Division 1B promotion chasers beat their mid-table Peterborough League Division One opposition 3-2 at March Town's GER ground.
With all the goals cored in the first half, Athletic took the lead only for Martin Saunders to equalise for the Lilies with his 10th goal of the season.
In front of a great crowd of 511, Harley Williams and Andy Howell then put Chatteris 3-1 up, before Whittlesey pulled a goal back before the break.
Delighted manager Manager Laurence Revell said: “It was a tremendous occasion. Chatteris Town has had some difficult times of late but when 500 of your own supporters come out to watch, you can see how much the football team means to the local community.
"This was the first final the club have been at for some years so there was a bit more added pressure for myself and the squad than normal.
"The day of the game saw two of my squad drop out with Covid which wasn’t ideal but I guess that's life at the present time and we just have to learn to live with it.
"From a management point of view, we had done our homework on Whittlesey and knew that this would be a very difficult game, their style of play was very direct and effective with the big lad up top.
"The game its self was played in great spirit from both sides, which is the way a final should be played. I think it was a fair result although I am very grateful to my goalkeeper for making a wonderful one handed save in the dying minutes to keep us in the lead.
"I think this shows that Chatteris Town are now going in the right direction and further success won’t be far away.”
Now the Lilies switch their attention to the Cambs Junior Cup,where they travel to play Great Shelford Reserves in the semi-final on Saturday.
Then it's on to the league, knowing that they will pip March Town A to the title if they win their last five games while improving their goal difference by six in those games.
