March youngster Cumbridge runs for county

It was another busy weekend of racing for both March Athletic Club’s Senior and Junior teams, with both complete this season’s Frostbite League in great form.

Before that, March AC Junior Luke Cumbridge swapped his March AC vest for a Cambridgeshire one when he represented the county in the UK Inter Counties Championships at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough.

Some 45 teams from all over the UK competed in the U15 competition and Luke completed the hilly and muddy 4km course in a time of 16:12 minutes, finishing 191st in a field of over 300 of the best runners in the country.

His first run for the county helped Cambridgeshire to a respectable 13th place team finish.

lOn Sunday, March AC Seniors Scott Bywater and Mike Blackledge were on the road. Scott completed a seven mile road race in the majestic grounds of Burghley House near Stamford in 1:02:34.

Mike completed the challenging pre-marathon 20-mile road race at Oundle in 2:59:05, eight minutes faster than his 2021 time.

The remainder of the March travelling runners went to Jubilee Park in Huntingdon for the sixth and final Frostbite League race of the 21-22 season.

In the spring sunshine, the seniors came in third, completing an excellent season and retaining their sixth place in the league; the senior’s best finish since the 2018-19 season. The juniors came in seventh and rose from eighth place to finish in seventh place in the league, also their best finish since the 2018-19 season.

For the juniors, Luke Cumbridge travelled back from his Loughborough exploits and came home in a superb fourth place in 8:04. There were also great runs from Archie Bullman and Matthew Baker, who both made the top 30. First home for the girls was Sasha Bland in 11:53.

For the seniors, Glen Watts had another storming race to come home in third place in 28:06, with top 30 finishes for Niall Jackson on his way back from injury, and Andy Cole.

First woman home was Kanina O’Neil in 34:34.
