Wisbech Town boss questions desire of his players after squandering two-goal home lead against Hucknall in United Counties League Premier Division North

Wisbech manager Alex Street questioned the desire of some of his players after a home draw with a team he admitted were poor.

The Fenmen took a 2-0 first-half lead in their United Counties League Premier North game with relegation-threatened Hucknall Town on Saturday but ended up drawing 2-2.

The home side got off to the best possible start when striker Michael Frew – on dual registration with Stamford – placed home an Ethan Wilson ball into the box after 12 minutes.

It was 2-0 after 24 minutes when Andre Williams drove down the line and played the ball across the box to Oli Williams who scored.

But it went downhill from there as Wisbech squandered their two-goal advantage against their Nottinghamshire visitors.

Street said: “My lads did not want to win as much as the opposition and that’s down to character.

“I’m really disappointed as in the first half we were miles better than them. But when they were there for the taking in the first half, playing against the wind and absolutely bricking themselves, we didn’t do enough.

“We didn’t get close enough, we didn’t squeeze, we missed a couple of good chances and paid the price for not organising properly.

“The second half was the worst performance since I’ve been manager. My midfield were terrible and left the defence out to dry. They couldn’t get on the ball or find a pass.

“And my forwards couldn’t hold it up and wanted to be fancy all the time.

“In the end Hucknall deserved a point and could have nicked it. Whether it was nerves, I don’t know, but we carried too many people today and I’m not happy.

“The only positive is that’s five games unbeaten at home now.

“I’ve said this so many times but they are a young squad who don’t speak to each other enough.”

Amur Ward was missing on Saturday after being injured in the warm-up but Street still put out a strong team.

“On paper that was probably the best line-up I’ve put out this season and, to be honest, the opposition were not very good so that performance it not acceptable.”

And next Saturday it’s promotion-chasing Melton Town at Fountain Fresh Park.

“That will be another scrap on a hard pitch, but we have got to find ways to manage it and find ways to win.”

And although relegation is extremely unlikely with his side 15 points clear of the drop zone with seven games left, Street added: “We are close to the bottom and we need a couple of results to give us a bit of breathing space so I probably will bring in a new face next week.

“If we lose again and the teams below us get points it puts the pressure on and all of a sudden you are looking over your shoulder.

“So someone in the squad will be disappointed but we have got to do what is best for this football club.

“We just need to do enough to stay out of that drop zone and then try to grow again for next year.

“They are all tough games now and everyone is looking for points. They are physical games too and we need to toughen up a little bit and get some points.”
