Fenmen boss slams 'embarrassing' referee

Wisbech Town interim manager Kevin Ward was left rueing bad luck and controversial refereeing decisions after Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Ilkeston.

After dominating much of a game which saw two players dismissed and several booked, Ward said: We're not getting the rub of the green and I'm absolutely fed up with some of the refereeing decisions we get, it's embarrassing.

"I've been in to see the referee at the end and asked why he booked Charley (Sanders) for that accidental handball when it's just brushed his hand and he's said it was for persistency as he'd made two or three bad tackles and had been warned the next indiscretion was a booking.

"A clatter of players led to their lad Kieran Wells being sent off and that was never a red card. And then Charlie makes a tackle and he sends him off to even it up. That is the worse refereeing I've seen at this level of football in years. That today was a joke.

"Overall, Ilkeston had four shots at goal and scored two. Their first goal was an error and their second goal against the run of play towards the end. Apart from that, they never hurt us.

"We've created so much. We had a great opportunity cleared off the line in the second half and for 15 minutes after that we created four or five chances. Yes we've lost, but on a very difficult pitch I thought we did well today. In that changing room they are disappointed but we are slowly getting there.

"We've played four or five teams now that are around the play-offs and we don't look out of place. No-one has won the league today and no-one has been relegated. I know we've got what it takes and there's a win coming."
