Avenue hosts lose by 146 runs to second-placed side

By Pete Woodhouse

March 1st XI lost on Saturday by 146 runs to second-placed Sawston.

The home side, out to avenge a one wicket defeat at The Avenue five weeks ago, smashed 80 runs from the first 10 overs in an impressive 297-8 total.

Saranga Rajaguru and Sam Clarke each picked up a couple of wickets, with the other four bowlers taking a single wicket apiece.

March were soon 56-3 before Brandon Phillips followed up last week’s 93 against Eaton Socon with another good knock of 59 not out in a disappointing reply of 151 all out.

Experienced batters Shardul Brahmbhatt, Rajaguru and Phillips were the only batsmen to make double figures.

Sawston 297-8, 50 overs (Clarke 2-42, Rajaguru 2-45), March 151 all out, 32.3 overs (Phillips 59no, Brahmbhatt 24, Rajaguru 23).

March 2nd XI made it four wins from five games in CCA Senior League Division 2 when they beat second in the table visitors Royston by 23 runs at The Avenue on Saturday.

Steve Hinson produced another good innings at the top of the order, 60 in the all out total of 208, Nigel Wright 40 and Tommy Howgego 36.

Howgego and Sam Mason then reduced Royston to 38-5 at one stage.

Howgego finished with three wickets and Mason with two as the visitors were dismissed with the final ball of the day for 185 – only their second defeat of the season.

CCA Junior League Division 3N leaders Wilburton inflicted a big 121-run defeat upon the March 3rd XI in this match rescheduled because of England’s televised World Cup match against Sweden.

The home side posted 308-5. Ioan Foreman and Harry Gowler shared four of the wickets to fall.

Injured first team wicketkeeper Lewis Welcher showed he can bat – scoring 60 at No4.

But only Shae Pooley and Jacob Gray – both scoring 21 – made any further impression on the bowlers in the final total of 187.

Wilburton 308-5, 40overs (Ioan Foreman 2-34, Harry Gowler 2-44, Jacob Gray 1-23), March 3rd XI 187 all out, 26 overs (Lewis Welcher 60, Shae Pooley 21, Jacob Gray 21).
