March’s Rob shows he has Wright stuff

There was a good turnout for the Ramsey and District Angling Society match fished on Magpie Pool at Rookery Waters, Pidley, writes Ken Wade.

Top rod was March ace Rob Wright. He drew peg 33 and after a slow start due to the frost overnight he gradually saw sport pick up.

He took a few fish out on the long pole, and then picked some more off the top before settling into his stride fishing the margins with maggot to finish with 124lb 8oz. The in-form John Price came second. He was on 26 and caught close in with luncheon meat for 83lb 12oz. Ashley Prestige was third weighing a level 77lb, followed by Paul Kilby on 72lb 12oz.

The Chatteris Rose and Crown annual pub match was held this year on Cuckoo canal at Townsend Lakes Fishery​. There was a reasonable turnout and to add a bit of interest they included a drawn pairs. Top individual with 114lb 10oz was Charlie Lawrence. He drew peg 20 and caught on a short pole line fishing shallow with pellet.

Runner-up was Kev Bridgement he put 98lb 4oz to the scales from peg18 fishing a top two with pellet and corn. He was followed by young Ed Shepherd with 85lb 8oz from peg 15.

Top pair were Charlie Lawrence and Perce Baxter​ with a combined weight 169lb 10oz, followed by Kev Bridgement and Paul Hollingsworth ​ with 161lb 4oz.

The Townsend Fishery open match was switched onto the Kingfisher Pool. Leading the way was Colin Begbie with a very respectable 76lb 6oz from peg 14. The fishery boss caught on a long pole line with pellet. His catch was made up of skimmers and a bonus carp.

Runner-up was Andy Adams; he included a double figure carp taken on meat from the margins to weigh in 63lb. In third place was Ashley Kinsey. He switched between a long and short pole line to finish on 53lb 12oz.

It’s a busy time for the Rookery Waters fishery, on Thursday they had the regular £1,000 Qualifier, this one fished on the Magpie Lake. Venue regular Kevin Peacock topped the field with an impressive 167lb 8oz. Using his favoured paste tactics down the edge he managed to catch some of the bigger carp from peg 34. Runner up from peg 8 was one of the areas top young anglers, Tom Edwards. He also fished paste out on a short pole line and also caught shallow down the edge for a mixed bag of carp, barbel and chub. In third was Matt Arnold on 105lb 12oz.

In the Saturday £1,000 qualifier fished on the Jay Lake it was the in-form Rob Wright that took the honours and qualified for the two day August final. Drawing peg 8 and fishing luncheon meat over meat on a long pole line, despite battling against a strong wind. He caught a mixed bag to finish with 101lb 4oz. Second place went to Simon Godfrey with an all shallow caught catch from peg 18 fished half depth towards the onion grasses on banded 6mm pellet. RAF man Ben Jackson came in third with 64lb 2oz.

Spratts A C fished on the Kingsland Large Lake in their latest fixture, Trevor Cousins topping the field with 109lb 9oz, fishing close in with meat and netting carp to 8lb. Peter Spriggs came in second with 90lb 110z, caught on paste close in late in the match. In third place on 75lb 1oz was Bob Allen. Again it was paste that did the trick and he caught carp to double figures.

Fenland Rods were on the Six Island pool for their opening fixture of the season, for some it was a tough day with a bitterly cold wind on the lake. There was no problem for match winner Mel Lutkin who caught steadily all day from peg 25, catching on meat fished close to the rushes to take a match win with 96lb 8oz. Dave Garner came second. He was running away with the match in the first half of the day, catching lots of fish on meat with a waggler, but it all went wrong and he struggled in the afternoon period finishing on 81lb 4oz. Third wasBob Allen with 74lb 12oz caught close in on maggot.
