Matthews at the double as Wimblington win again




Wimblington go into the Christmas break third in the Cambs County League Senior B and just three points off leaders March Town Reserves after a 2-1 home win over Cottenham United on Saturday.

Two goals from Ben Matthews took him to eight for the season and set his side up nicely for their game against the Hares on January 6. Wimblington have already beaten second place Great Shelford Reserves 2-0 this season.

In the Premier Division, Wisbech St Mary slip to tenth after a disappointing 4-0 reverse at Witchford, while in 1B, mid-table Benwick Athletic (Christchurch) rounded the year off with a good 3-1 home win over Great Paxton, Ross Alexander, Alan Setch and Jacob Gray netting.

2B side Outwell Swifts are through to the next round of the Cambs Junior Cup after a 3-2 home win over 1A side Mott MacDonald. Swifts took the lead through the prolific Adan-Jay Lewis’ 12th of the campaign after great work from Brandon Hedge, but the visitors equalised and then took a deserved lead from the penalty spot.

A great finish from man of the match Ethan Goodale for his first of the season pulled Swifts level before Hedge notched his 16th to put Swifts into the next round.

Manea United won their 2B mid-table clash at Papworth 4-0 and it’s just one league defeat in ten for Wisbech St Mary Reserves who beat St Ives Town A 2-0, Will Ketteringham and Ryan McManus scoring.

Wisbech St Mary A go into the New Year top of 4B after a 3-1 win at March Academy Adults, but Manea United Reserves were beaten 8-2 at home by Mepal and Sutton Mens Reserves. Wisbech Town Acorns lost 6-4 at Pymoor, Wesley Boughen and Derren Singleton netting two each.

Doddington Three Lions, of 3B, crashed out of the Cambridge Lower Junior Cup after a 4-0 home defeat to undefeated 4B side Willingham Wolves.

Tydd climb out of the Peterborough League Premier Division relegation zone after winning a vital game at the bottom away at Netherton United. The two sides were level at the break, Jamie Mills netting for the visitors, but goals by Charlie Minchella and Jack Minchella sealed the win in the second half.

Chatteris Town boosted their Division One promotion hopes with a 6-1 thrashing of Stilton United, Casey Stonnell-Fitzgerald netting two to make it 17 for the season and Martin Saunders with his 12th, Sam Bond with his 16th, and Alfie Richardson and Jack McLoughlin also on target, with Connor Innes man of the match.

In the same division, there was a great win for Long Sutton Athletic, 4-1 at home over local rivals Holbeach United Sports, Calvin Bird with his eighth of the season, Jamal Nyang with his sixth, Jamie Taylor and James Ward on target.

And there was a third win of the campaign for Wisbech Town Reserves, 2-1 over Netherton United Reserves, Declan Foster and Claudiu Simon scoring.

A strong Leverington Sports Reserves side battled back from a 2-0 half time deficit to beat Hampton 4-3 at home in Division Two, Jake Ogden netting a hat-trick and Kieran Hamilton also on target.

Tydd Reserves are out of the Spalding Inter-Services Cup after a 4-3 first round defeat at Crowland Town Reserves in all-Division Two clash

A 2-0 defeat at Park Farm Pumas A left Long Sutton Athletic Reserves with 15 defeats from 15 in Division Three, but in Division Four Leverington Sports A enjoyed a terrific 3-0 win at Cardea Reserves, Aaron McKenna, Dale Palmer and sub Harry Barket scoring.

Finally, in the North West Norfolk League Division Two League Cup, Marshland Saints Reserves beat Clenchwarton Reserves 5-1, with Jack Cropley and Sonny Wright grabbing two apiece and Dylan Rust also on target.
