William Horspool and Matthew McClure impress for Wisbech Wheelers at King’s Lynn and Spalding races

Wisbech Wheelers’ William Horspool impressed in a national race which featured nearly 100 fellow cyclists – but Matthew McClure was the star of the week.

The youngster lined up alongside 97 U16 riders at Oulton Park for Round 3 of the National Youth Closed Circuit Series on Sunday, April 16.

The weather was somewhat damp, but not enough to dampen the young racers’ spirits as they raced for one hour and 20 minutes.

An average pace of 26.5mph was set from the start, which made it difficult for riders to move around the main bunch and saw William roll across the line in approximately 60th place.

He then followed this up at a Spalding 10TT on Tuesday, April 18. In dry but windy conditions, he finished with a new personal best time of 23:01.

Last Wednesday in a windy King’s Lynn, just five riders competed - three of whom were flying the Wisbech Wheeler flag.

Times were slow, with Roger Sewell (28:05), Denese Halahan (40:27) and William (24:59) putting in valiant displays.

Following that, King’s Lynn held their open 10 mile time trial at Tottenhill on Saturday afternoon – and the much improved conditions were evident as Matthew McClure took third place overall with a time of 21:26.

William was the fastest juvenile with a time of 23:36. Denese Hallahan finished in 33:07.

Roger Sewell decided to increase his racing distance and travelled to the Shaftesbury CC Open 25, near Cambridge on Sunday, where he finished in 1.02.13.
