March Town defeat promotion rivals St Neots while Wisbech Town record first league win of the campaign against Sleaford

Play-off chasers March Town recorded a vital win over one of their promotion rivals last night while Wisbech Town picked up their first win in all competitions.

The Hares produced what manager Ash Taylor described as an 'exceptional display' to beat United Counties League Premier Division rivals St Neots at the GER and the Fenmen defeated Sleaford 4-1 at Fountain Fresh Park.

Last night's win for March stretched their unbeaten sequence to seven games and moved them up to second in the league standings, level on points with Rugby Borough having played a game more.

Dan Cotton, far right, scored his third goal in as many games for March Town last night.

Matty Foy put the Hares in front after 11 minutes before the Saints, who reached the play-offs themselves last season, redressed the balance through Harvey Williams 20 minutes later.

Dan Cotton netted his third league goal in as many games towards the end of the half as the Hares took a 2-1 lead into the break.

A competitive second half didn't see any further goals into injury time when home substitute Andre Williams confirmed the three points for March by adding a third.

On Saturday, March Town are in cup action when they host Mulbarton Wanderers in the FA Vase.

March Town: Gill, Green, Brumby (Bucciero), Withers, Emmington, Burrows (Saunders), Cotton, Tait, Gillies, Foy, Tsagium (Williams). Subs not used: Biggs, Carolan.

Meanwhile, the Fenmen are finally up and running at the tenth attempt.

On the day Wisbech Town announced the passing of former player and manager Ian 'Jigger' Jones, the players produced almost the perfect home performance in his memory.

Wisbech included the dual-registered Danny Setchell and Charley Sanders in a strong-looking line-up.

The home side got off to the perfect start as Toby Allen powered the ball past visiting goalkeeper Liam Flitton to give them the lead in the third minute.

But as so often this season the Fenmen conceded next and that was the case again as Billy Gillies unleashed a magnificent strike into the back of the net to equalise midway through the first half.

The hosts regained the lead 11 minutes before the break as Sam Murphy converted a cross from Ethan Wilson.

Charley Sanders made it 3-1 to Wisbech in the 63rd minute and the club's first three points of the season were confirmed when the excellent Elliot Foster added a fourth goal in stoppage time.

The win lifts the Fenmen two places up the table and out of the relegation zone into 18th.

On Saturday, they are back in home action when Gresley Rovers are the visitors.

The club will host a minute's silence in memory of Jigger Jones before the games and it is hoped that many of his friends and former team-mates will be able to attend.

Jones played 582 times for the Fenmen, scoring eight times, before his spell as manager saw him oversee a successful period in the club's history in the late 1990s.

Wisbech Town: Lakin, Wilson (Williams), Harris (Cavozzi), Braham, Freeman, Murphy (Zaluzinskis), Foster, Setchell, Sanders, Allen, Ward. Subs not used: Balding, Mattless.
