Three Counties Running Club members take on gruelling Hereward relay over four legs

Three Counties members took on the rescheduled Hereward Relay - called off last weekend due to strong winds - hosted by March Athletics Club.

The Hereward Relay was first run in 1998 when 14 teams took part and has since grown with as many as 117 teams taking part in 2018.

The race starts in Peterborough and follows (as far as possible) the Hereward Way for over 39 miles to Ely crossing over bridleways, fields, bridges and tracks and is therefore unsuitable for wheelchair users.

Relay teams consist of four members who each run one stage.

Those feeling more ambitious or looking for a tougher challenge can take on the ultra and run all 39 miles solo to become a local legend.

Leg one is Peterborough to Whittlesey (6.9 miles), leg two is Whittlesey to March (10.6 miles), leg three is March to Welney (11.5 miles) and leg four is Welney to Ely (10.7 miles

Three Counties members love this event as it’s a great team bonding event, open to the elements and very good for character-building.

This year due to all the rain the course was very muddy making it tough going underfoot and with the added winds it made for a very tough event for everyone. This year TCRC had 2 teams and an Ultra duo taking part.

The ladies' team consisted of Kim Coultard, Diane Tyler, Tracy Adams and Debbie Agger while the ixed team consisted of! Les Phillips, Gary Ingrey, Lorraine Parker and James Stace

The Ultra was split in half with Dean Clark (Second Claim) running legs one and two then handing over to Craig Freestone to finish legs three and four.

Everyone had fantastic runs making the teams and club very proud. There were no times available at the time of going to press.
