Wisbech members contest events at Leicester, Cambridge, Spalding and King’s Lynn

The time trial and road racing season is in full flow with Wisbech Wheelers members competing in several local and regional events over the past few weeks.

King's Lynn held their fortnightly club 10-mile TT in which three Wisbech representatives travelled over to Tottenhill to brave the less-than-favourable low temperatures.

William Horspool finished in 23:50, Roger Sewell 27:26 and Denese Hallahan 36:55.

Two days later, Cambridge CC held its 15-mile Time Trial on the F2/15 course at Cambourne.

Riders faced a cold day with a breeze from the northeast and light rain showers added to the discomfort.

These conditions did not deter Wisbech Wheeler Super Vet Roger Sewell who completed the course in 37:21.

Horspool was next in action at the Spalding Club 10 on their SP10/3 Course at Barrier Bank, where he finished sixth from a field of 17 riders.

Youngster Horspool continued to build on his recent road racing experience in the final round of the NCRA Handicap race, near Kettering, on April 27.

Following a hard-fought race, he finished in 11th place on the day and first junior, earning him a well-deserved final result of second place overall in the series.

For most, one race a day would be enough but Horspool decided to test his limits to the full earlier this month when competing in the third and fourth category race followed by the E123 race just 20 minutes later at Leicester Cycle Circuit in the ARIC Spring Crit.

The 3/4 race did not quite go to plan and following some good positional riding was squeezed out on the last lap.

From the lessons he learnt in the previous race, he again rode a very good race against some very good opposition.

With two small breakaways, the teenager stayed near the front of the peloton finishing in 12th place earning him his first National B race points of the season.

With the summer nights now starting to arrive, Wisbech Wheelers are running their summer midweek club rides on a Wednesday evening at 6pm, starting and finishing at the Sportsman in Elm.

These rides are for all cyclists, experienced and new who want to learn to ride in a group with others.

The ride is approximately 1hr with the pace and distance dependent on the riders attending.
