Luke Hipwell named as new Wisbech Town manager after Alex Street steps down
A familiar name has returned to the helm at Wisbech Town after manager Alex Street stepped down on Monday.
As expected, former player and coach Luke Hipwell has taken over as the new Fenmen boss.
Street had been in charge just under a year and will stay at the club as back-up goalkeeper and also supporting the first team.
Hipwell was most recently in charge at Deeping Rangers from June 2022 until late February 2024 and had previously been a coach with the Fenmen under Gary Setchell.
His imminent appointment was announced by chairman Paul Brenchley a few weeks ago but as time went on, doubt had crept into some supporters’ minds.
Hipwell said: “I am delighted to be joining Wisbech Town as first team manager. It’s a club I’ve had great experiences with as a player and coach/assistant, so when the opportunity arose, it was something that I couldn’t turn down.
“But I needed to make sure that it was the right timing for me and that I could fully commit to the job.
“I hope to help the club progress moving forward, both on and off the pitch, starting with the FA Vase game on Saturday away at Harleston.”
Hipwell’s management team will consist of Ross McNeil as first team coach and an assistant manager, yet to be confirmed.
A club spokesman said: “We would like to place on record our thanks to Alex for all of his efforts during his time with us. Alex will continue to support the first team both on and off the pitch, along with the operational side of the football club.”
